أصبحت مهنة التدريس كغيرها من المهن، تحتاج تجديدات بحكم التطور، حيث شهد القطاع العديد من المستجدات التربوية والبيداغوجية، فمن الممكن الانضمام إلى مهنة التدريس من خلال التدريب وإصدار الشهادات، لكن أن يصبح الفرد مدرسا محترفا فهذا يعني أن يسلك المعلم وفق أعلى المعايير داخل الفصل الدراسي وخارجه، يمكن ذلك من خلال تطوير مهني مستمر يساعد المعلم على احتراف التعليم، فالمعلم المحترف يجب عليه أولا أن يتصف باحتراف أو بطريقة مهنية، لأن إضفاء الطابع المهني على التعلم لا يكفي لنجاح عملية التعلم، لذا يعتبر رفع كفاءة المعلم هدفاً أساسياً من أهداف المؤسسة التربوية، وتعد الكفاءات التدريسية من المتطلبات الأساسية للمعلمين من أجل إنجاح المواقف التعليمية.
