The research sought to identify the competencies necessary for special education teachers to develop the mental abilities of special education children in Taif Governorate. It also aimed to know the differences between special education teachers in Taif governorate in the degree to which they possess the necessary competencies to develop the mental abilities of children in special education centers. The researcher followed the descriptive (survey) approach, which deals with existing events, phenomena and practices that are available for study and measured as they are. The study population consisted of all special education teachers in the special education centers in the Taif governorate, whose number is (ٔٔ1) and the number of special education teachers that were observed to achieve the objectives of this study was (70) of the special education teachers. The research tools came in the form of a questionnaire to collect data and information, a variety of statistical methods were used using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), after the data was encoded and entered into the computer. The researcher has reached a number of results, the most important of which are: The competencies necessary for special education teachers to develop the mental abilities of children in special education centers came to a very high degree with an average of (4.40) from the viewpoint of special education teachers. The axis of communication and interaction with the child came first, followed by the axis of academic performance, followed by the axis of using the educational media, followed by the axis of evaluation, followed by the axis of cognitive adequacy, followed by the axis of classroom management adequacy.
