AB - This research aims to identify whether or not second-year Iraqi EFL college students have illocutionary competence in studying short stories, also if there is any difference between males and females in illocutionary competence. This study is a correlational study, and the sample of this study is 160 students in the second year of the English Department at Tikrit University in the academic year 2021-2022, and the data is gathered by using a test to determine students' illocutionary competence in studying short stories. Results show that the majority of them have a low capacity to master illocutionary competence in studying short stories. Also, there is no significant difference between male’s and female’s illocutionary competence. (Published abstract) http://search.shamaa.org/abstract_ar.gif
