AB - This study aimed at identifying differences in anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobia and hysteria. It also investigated the predictability of the aforementioned variables through gender (males - females), cultural background (rural - urban), major (literary - theoretical) and birth order (first - middle). The sample comprised (640) male and female adolescent students recruited from 2nd high school grade, rural and urban areas and both Al-Azhar and general educational systems within Cairo and Sharkia. Their mean age was (17.2) years (SD= 1.4). The study utilized anxiety and depression scale (Ghareen Abdul-Fattah), both subscales of obsessive compulsive and phobia from symptom checklist - 90 (translated by Abdulraqeeb El-Beheiry) and hysteria subscale from Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (translated by Lewis Kamel Melika). Results showed that there were significant gender differences in anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive, phobia and hysteria, in favor of the females. There were significant differences in anxiety and depression in favor of the rural residents. There were significant differences in anxiety and depression in favor of the literary majors. There were significant differences in anxiety between the first and middle offspring, in favor the first one. Anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive, phobia and hysteria were predicted through gender. Anxiety and depression were predicted through cultural background. These results were discussed according to the theoretical framework and previous research. (Published abstract) http://search.shamaa.org/abstract_en.gif
