AB - The present study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of using the strategy of learning by playing on the achievement of mathematics and on the motivation of the second-grade students in Jordan. The participants of the study consisted of fifty second grade students, who were distributed in two sections: one section was selected randomly to be the control group (27) students, and it was taught by the conventional method whereas the experimental group (27 students) was taught by using learning through playing strategy. Two instruments were developed for data collection: an achievement test in mathematics and a motivation scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS (i.e., means and standard deviation, MANCOVA and ANCOVA). The results revealed that there were statistically significant differences at )a=0.05) between the mean scores of the experimental group and those of the control group on their achievement in the mathematics posttest. The experimental group showed significantly higher gains in their mean scores compared to the control group. The study also revealed that there were statistically significant differences at )a=0.05) between the mean scores of the experimental group and those of the control group on their motivation scale. These results were in favor of the experimental group. Based on these results, a recommendation was presented to other researchers to carry on similar investigations on the impact of using learning through playing strategy on students’ motivation and achievement in learning other courses at different study levels.
