AB - This study aimed to assess the level of understanding of the concepts of mathematical operations of numbers among students in the intermediate basic stage in Amman with relation to the variables of grade and gender. The sample consisted of (1824) students, selected by using a stratified random sample from the fourth, fifth and sixth grades in public schools in Amman. To achieve the objectives of the study, a scale of understanding was used. The validity and reliability of the scale were verified in appropriate ways. The results of the study showed that the level of students' understanding of mathematical operations is low. Results also revealed that students’ understanding developed in higher grades and that the level of understanding of division operation was the lowest among the four mathematical operations. Results indicated that there are statistically significant differences due to gender in favor of males on the multiplication and division domain in the scale. The study concluded with some suggestions calling for carrying out studies on evaluating the efficiency of Mathematics teachers’ understanding of the concepts and mathematical principles they teach and its impact on their students.
