The emergence of mobile phone as a communication technology, canceled the spatial and temporal constraints between the parties of communication, in addition to its characteristics of smallness and mobility, and its multiple applications and services, attracted the attention of users. In order to reveal the consequences of the use of mobile phone on the communication process, has been conducting this study, which looking at the effects of mobile phone on social communication types, for the students of University of Constantine, registered for the university season 2011/2012 as a model of the Algerian universities. The importance of the study coming from the detection of the most important effects of mobile phone on forms and types of communication adopted by the university student in communicating with others, as well as, the detection of new types imposed by it. The study aims to find out: 1) how to use the mobile phone by the university student, and the motives behind this use. 2) Effects caused by mobile phone on types of communication, for the university student. 3) The new types of communication imposed by the mobile phone. The study asks these questions: 1) what are the stages of the development of mobile phone? 2) How does the university student use the mobile phone? 3) What are the motives of this use? 4) What are the types of social communication existing? 5) Did the mobile phone lead to receding of personal communication for the university student? 6) Did the use of mobile phone, lead the student to increase the adoption of instrumental communication at the expense of personal communication? 7) Did the SMS service promoting the written communication? 8) What are the effects of mobile phone use in the relationships between the student and his family? 9) Did the mobile phone cancel the spatial and temporal dimensions, and deepen the social humane dimension of relations for the university student? The study was depended on the descriptive method. In this study we used the "questionnaire" as a tool of gathering the field information. The study was applied on 313 students of University of Constantine which they were be selected by the stratified sample. The study attained to this results: 1) habits and motives of use: a) the mobile phone has produced a new ways of connecting for the university student, are the communicate through calls and messaging. b) The university student uses the call service more than the SMS service. c) the use of mobile phone by the university student take a negative character, where that 52.72% of sample listening to music through the mobile phone, and 27.27% use frequently coordination applications, and 26.92% use game applications, and 20.50% use photography applications and recording videos. d) The use of mobile phone by the university student on the social communication, is limited to communicate with family and friends, and the creation of emotional relationships. 2) Mobile phone and social communication: a) the university student prefers the call service, and considers it closer to the personal contact; while the SMS service represents for him a means of exchanging congratulations and greeting only. b) The mobile phone reinforced social communication for the university student, especially with friends, and make him in permanent contact with them. c) The mobile phone reinforced the communication between the university student and his family even outside the home. d) The mobile phone is not a reason for isolation and absence of family dialog for the student, because he prefers to share his family members the talk rather than preoccupation with his mobile phone. e) The university student exploits mobile phone to lie and giving false information about his whereabouts. f) The mobile phone made the creation of emotional relations between the sexes so easy, and in a confidential manner. g) The mobile phone contributed in reducing parental supervision of children. 3) Mobile phone and the social relationships of university student: a) mobile phone didn't lead to the decline of personal contact for university student. b) Mobile phone didn't pay the university student to the adoption of instrumental communication at the expense of personal contact. c) Mobile phone led to decline the emotional dimension of relations, where he reduced the element of longing to others, and it reduced also the intimate of relations with others.
