AB - The study aimed to identify the suggested role of Saudi government universities in the transition towards sustainability from the point of view of academic leaders, in three pillars: academic, research, and social sustainability. And to identify the administrative requirements necessary to activate the role of the administrations of the Saudi government universities in the transition towards sustainability. A descriptive survey approach was used, and the population of the study consisted of (1264) academic leaders in five universities: King Abdulaziz University, King Saud University, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, King Khalid University, and Northern Border University. And the study sample consisted of (297) academic leaders representing (23.5%) of the study population, and they have been chosen using the simple random method, and the study tool (questionnaire) was conducted on them in the second semester of the academic year 2018/2019. The study found that the most important administrative requirements for the transition towards sustainability are: 1) take advantage of global indicators and systems specialized in sustainability. 2) Develop a strategic plan for the transition towards sustainability. 3) Develop a sustainability policy for the university. And the most important proposals for the transition towards academic, research, and social sustainability are: 1) disseminate and document best experiences and practices of sustainability. 2) Preparing lectures, seminars, and scientific meetings on sustainability. 3) Encourage the university community to participate in sustainability research activities. 4) Organize and host research activities, conferences, and workshops on sustainability. 5) Provide training opportunities for students to serve and educate the community about issues and challenges of sustainability.
