Citizenship is voluntary, civilized behavior carried out by an individual for the benefit of his country, or the place in which he lives. It is a moral contractual commitment based on the values and principles of a healthy person towards his society, and it becomes his personal behavior and daily practice in his life and conscience. Loyalty to the homeland is the logical result that all society seeks to instill in its members, to take pride in belonging to its history and civilization, as they are the basis for shaping the structure of identity. Loyalty is acquired through social awareness, as a result of sharing a similar lifestyle and cultural conditions, even if the degree of awareness among its members differs. It is a summary of the history of the cultural and civilizational experiences of society. Values are the goal and common good of adhering to high ideals. When values are rooted and linked to the lives of individuals and groups in their human selves and are reflected in their behavior and social relations as regulating rules of behavior and a force for belonging, the more they are rooted among the members of society, especially its youth, who are considered the most important tool for building it and advancing it to keep pace with the rise of civilization. The ranks of advanced societies have increased their cohesion and progress. The paper set out to ask: How effective is instilling citizenship values towards building national identity among university students? The importance lies in knowing the inculcation of citizenship values and their role in building identity. It also aimed to determine the effectiveness of citizenship values according to different variables towards building national identity and to find out which variables have the most impact. It was conducted on students studying at the University of Misrata for the fall 2023 semester. Discussion of the results - characteristics of the sample. The results showed, according to the gender variable: that the highest percentage of females, the majority of whom are between the ages of (18 to 24), and the majority percentage, according to the scientific specialization variable, included sociology as a regular registration. Regarding the answer to the research questions: The first question: What is the level of instilling citizenship values among university youth in the College of Arts? The results showed that the arithmetic mean of the sample’s opinions reached (2.12) and the level of significance, p-value, equals (0.000), which is less than (0.05), which means that the level of citizenship values is available to a moderate degree, based on the arithmetic mean. As for the second question: about the level of constructive Identity among university youth. The arithmetic means of the sample’s opinions reached 2.40, and the level of significance, p value, is equal to (0.000), which is less than (0.05), which means that the level of identity construction is available to a large degree, based on the arithmetic mean. This requires raising the level of awareness and disseminating concepts. It is related to the values of citizenship to build identity, and harnessing destructive media to instill values, customs, and traditions to preserve society's identity. (Published abstract)
