The aim of this study is to know the role of growing up in a bilingual environment in learning a new language - the French language. The comparison of children who have acquired one mother language (Arabic dialect) and children who have been growing up in a bilingual language environment (Arabic and Berber language) serves evaluating this role. For this study, we selected a sample of eighty fifth-grade pupils for both classes in the city of Setif, and we applied the interview, observation, and French-proficiency test that include the following aspects: lexical, grammatical, morphological, and expressive ones. The approach in this study is descriptive comparative. We found that there are differences between the average results for monolingual students and bilingual students in French-proficiency; we found that there are significant differences in favor of monolingual students in the ability to learn French.
