This study aims to discover the perceptions of students of the Department of Art Education at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) towards self-assessment, and the challenges facing its implementations in teaching Fine Arts. It also identifies the impact of years of study variables on these perceptions. The researchers used the descriptive-analytical approach. The study sample consisted of (167) male and female students from the Department of Art Education at SQU in the academic year 2020-2021, where the study tool was applied in the second semester (Sparing 2021). To achieve the study's aims, the researchers designed a questionnaire consisting of 42 items devised into four clusters: the importance of self-assessment, the objectives of self-assessment, the forms and methods and techniques of self-assessment, and the challenges of implementing self-assessment in teaching fine arts. The questionnaire was distributed to the study sample after establishing validity and reliability. The study results showed high perceptions among students of the Department of Art Education towards self-assessment and their perceptions were also high to the challenges facing its implementations in teaching Fine Art, according to the average mean score. The study also showed no statistically significant differences among students' perceptions of self-assessment and its implementation challenges in teaching Fine Arts due to their academic years' study. In the light of these results, the study recommends conducting other similar studies to investigate the art teachers' use of self-assessment techniques in teaching art. The study also recommends providing the educational field with more knowledge and Arabic resources that deal with self-assessment and its importance in teaching. (Published abstract)
