The aim of the study was to examine the status quo of national and civic education textbooks in the basic stage in Jordan for eighth, ninth and tenth grades, and to identify the status quo of teachers teaching these textbooks from different perspectives. The study also aimed to present some future visions to address the weaknesses found in both textbooks and teachers. The qualitative design was used in the study. To achieve the aims of the study, an instrument, which was a personal interview, was developed. The personal interview was divided into two stages, the first was to detect the status quo of textbooks and teachers, while the second was to provide future visions to address the weaknesses found in textbooks and teachers. The sample of the study consisted of (37) participants, of whom (21) were national and civic education teachers at public schools affiliated to al Ramtha District educational directorate in the second semester of (2018), a sample of (8) social studies educational supervisors working in the different educational directorates at Irbid Governorate, in addition to a sample of (8) faculty members specialized in social studies curricula and teaching methods working in the different Jordanian public and private universities. The study concluded with the following results: The results relating to the status quo of textbooks that there are several positive and negative aspects in national and civic education textbooks. As for the positive aspects, it was found that there focus on developing students' attitudes in some areas such as extremism, violence and terrorism at the proactive and treatment levels, they develop social skills, consider the logical sequence and chronological order in addressing and presenting topics and concepts. They also work on promoting various values, take into consideration students' individual differences. As for the negative aspects, it was found that they mainly focus on the theoretical aspects, and are unable to increase students' attitudes towards the positive use of technology. As for the results relating to teachers status quo, it was found that they suffer from weaknesses in their epistemological knowledge concerning the topics of national and civic education; the majority of them rely on traditional teaching methods; their overuse of pencil- paper achievement examination; lack of these examinations of well- established educational standards; lack of using modern technologies in teaching; and finally, low level of class management skills among teachers. The study also presented some future visions to address the weaknesses found in the national and civic education textbooks; including the need to more focus on the practical applied aspect in these textbooks by focusing more on community service and voluntary work activities, more attention to field trips promoting knowledge, engaging students in activities promoting their participation in festivals and national celebrations; more focus on using the technological media to promote the positive use of technology by providing computer room for social studies, including national and civic education, and the use of social media tools in teaching national and civil education teaching. The study presented some future visions to address weaknesses of teachers teaching national and civic education. These were twofold: the first was related to pre- service teaching during their university study by creating a specialization for national and civic education, adding university courses in geography, history, returning social studies teacher preparation program specialization. The second is related to in- service rehabilitation programs by providing training and professional development continuous programs to be abreast with the new developments in the social studies various fields needed by teachers, and finally, to adopt the optimal practices and initiatives in teachers’ qualification.
