The study aimed to examine the status of academic freedom and the professional performance of faculty members in Saudi universities, and the relationship between them as well as providing a vision to improve the professional performance of faculty members in Saudi universities in the light of achieving dimensions of academic freedom. The researcher has applied the associative descriptive approach, The study was conducted on a sample of (1172) faculty members of King AbdulAziz University, Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, Al-Imam Abdulrahman Alfaisla University, Jazan University and Hail University, The researcher has designed the research instrument (questionnaire), The study has resulted in the following: It showed that the faculty members had a medium approval level regarding the reality of academic freedom (content and methods of teaching, research and scientific publishing, expression of opinion, participation in decision-making) a medium approval level, It gave the reality of the professional performance for the faculty members in Saudi Universities in these dimensions (teaching and curriculum development, scientific research, community services, special self-development), it also showed that there is relationship between academic freedom and the degrees of professional performance in its dimensions, There was a statistically significant differences between the average response of the participants according to the variable of the "university" and the variable of "the degree", there were not statistically significant differences between the average response of the sample members according to "the specialization" variable and "the experience", However, there was not a difference between the average responses of participants around "research and scientific publishing" and "expression of opinion" according to the variable "degree". In the light of these results, the researcher presented a proposed vision to improve the professional performance of faculty members in Saudi universities, the proposed vision was based on eight main principles that varied between intellectual, theoretical and field results, The proposed vision was based on a scientific methodology consisting of six main stages (SWOT), and Steiner's strategic planning career model, to achieve the overall strategic objective of (improving the professional performance of faculty members in Saudi Universities in the light of achieving the dimensions of academic freedom). The proposed vision included fourteen strategic objectives and set specific mechanisms and procedures for implementing the sub strategic objectives and introduced a number of recommendations, the most important recommendation is: adopting the vision proposed by university leaders and officials in higher education, disseminating them among the Saudi universities and facilitating their implementation.(Author's abstract)
