The need to institutionalize social innovation in education has emerged due to the global challenges facing countries that governments can no longer confront alone. The current paper has sought to achieve the following: shedding light on the theoretical foundations of social innovation in education, clarifying the features of institutionalizing social innovation in education in light of some global trends and drivers, reaching some conclusions and presenting some proposals for institutionalizing social innovation in education. The current paper shows the importance of institutionalizing social innovation in education and that it is a term that has its origins in philosophies across different eras. The dimensions of the relationship between social innovation and education were also revealed: Education may be one of the fields of social innovation. (Innovation in education), or innovation is one of the contributions of innovation education institutions (Innovation by education), or education is a goal of social innovation (innovation for education). The multiplicity of forms and shapes of social innovation in education was also clarified, and some of the justifications and challenges that make institutionalizing social innovation in education so important were extracted. These justifications varied between social, technological, economic, educational and political. The paper touched on the most important mechanisms for institutionalizing social innovation in education, represented by: integrating social innovation education into educational institutions, establishing social innovation laboratories, establishing social innovation platforms. Then the most important benefits of institutionalizing social innovation in education were extracted for society as well as for students. The paper concluded by presenting several proposals to enhance the institutionalization of social innovation in education, which were presented according to each mechanism separately.
