The study aimed to investigate the reality of Saudi public universities' activation of the open innovation model from the perspective of academic staff and leaders. To achieve this objective, the study adopted the descriptive survey method and applied a questionnaire for data collection. The study sample size was (424) participants, representing six public universities. The findings revealed that the reality of universities activating the open innovation model achieved a moderate degree in all dimensions addressed by the study: the reality of supporting the principles of the open innovation model; the reality of leaders providing an appropriate environment for implementing the open innovation model; the reality of supporting open innovation practice input; and the reality of supporting open innovation practice output. In light of these findings, the study recommended that it is important to spread the culture of open innovation at universities and establish an innovation center at each university, which will contribute to developing strategies, policies, and procedures that support the implementation of the open innovation model.
