The study aimed to find out the degree of availability of leadership competencies in Libyan universities based on the American professional standards for educational leaders. To achieve this, the study relied on the descriptive survey methodology for data collection from the sample of the study, which consisted of (157) academic leaders, A questionnaire consisting of (60) items was built, divided into (9) domains. The results indicated that the degree of availability of leadership competencies among academic leaders in Libyan universities was low, the results also showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the degree of availability of leadership competencies in Libyan universities due to the two variables (job position and gender). And there were statistically significant differences in the degree of availability of leadership competencies in Libyan universities due to the variable (academic rank), Accordingly, the researchers recommended that more attention be paid by the Ministry of Higher Education and the authorities concerned with preparing qualification programs for capacity development, by providing training programs based on raising the level of mastery of leadership competencies and based on standards based on quality performance.
