The study aimed to determine the relationship between self-discrepancy and depression among university students, along with the effect of both gender (male - female) and specialization (scientific - literary) on self-discrepancy and depression. The study was conducted on a sample of (400) male and female students from scientific and literary colleges from the University of Zagazig, where their ages ranged between (18-23) years old, Using the following tools: Scale of self-discrepancy (actual - ideal) prepared by the researcher, Beck scale for depression, translated by Gharib Abdel Fattah second edition (2000). The results revealed that there is a positive statistically significant correlation between self-discrepancy (actual - ideal) and depression among Zagazig University students. Furthermore, there is a statistically significant effect of the two factors: gender (male - female) and specialization (scientific - literary) in their joint effect on contradictory self-perception and depression in favor of females. The results also revealed that some dimensions predict self-discrepancy and depression among university students. (Published abstract)
