This study aimed to examine the relationship between phonological awareness and verbal short-term memory by word reading in first grade students. The sample consisted of (32) students from first grade in the primary school aged from (6) to (7) years, All the participants underwent following tests: Raven colored matrices to evaluate the general mental capacity; phonological awareness test (PA) consisting of three subtests: sound detection, sound deletion; verbal short-term memory test (pseudo-words repetition). The Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated using the statistical package SPSS (version 22); The results of the study showed that there was a significant correlation between PA and word reading. However, there was no significant correlation between verbal short-term memory and word reading, indicating that short-term memory may be less effective in reading than PA in this stage of reading development.
