Leadership succession planning in universities is a necessity for optimal investment of human resources, ensuring stability and avoiding a potential leadership vacuum, and the absence of leadership succession planning in universities has serious repercussions on institutional success, given that succession planning represents the transformation tool to support career growth among candidates for leadership positions. This study aimed to know the role of leadership succession planning in building university leaders. The research problem is defined in the following main question: What is the role of leadership succession planning in building university leaders? In order to answer this question, the research relies on the descriptive approach as a basic approach in addressing the research axes in order to identify the research problem and collect information and data that help determine it. Among the most important results it reached: 1) The succession planning process has a significant impact on preparing potential leaders from within or outside the organization. 2) The succession planning process cannot be done in isolation from human resource planning.
