This study treats the history of education in Shendi area in the period 1900-1969. It throws light on the spreading and developing of the different levels of education in the reaches of Shendi in the aforesaid time. It is a pioneering study in treating independently the history of education in Shendi area. The study aimed at tracing the history of education in Shendi area, specifying and classifying its centres and their roles, highlighting the general features of its spreading, displaying the role of religious education in filling the gap made by the slow spreading of formal education, showing the interaction between the community and the educational institutions and estimating the share of the area in education relative to all the Northern Province. The study has adopted the historical methodology and chronologically chaptered. It also used the descriptive and analytical approach and regarding the spatial and temporal limits. The sources of the study are: unpublished manuscripts in the National Manuscripts House in Khartoum, published documents and manuscripts like "Tabagat Wad Daif Allah", "Shuna Author Manuscript", Departmental Reports, Emam Mahdi Leaflets, periodicals, theses and interviews. Of the important findings of the study: Firstly, determining the historical epoch of the appearance of the educational centres in Shendi area. Secondly, illustrating the contribution of Shendi area educational centres in the educational movement in all Sudan in the 17th century. Thirdly, showing the association between the spread of the religious education and the spread of Islam in Shendi area. Fourthly, it was found that the second decade of the 20th century had witnessed the beginning of formal education in Shendi area. Fifthly, it was discovered that formal education up to 1937 was centralized in Shendi town. Sixthly, displaying the role played by Shendi area in training teachers and educating adults all over the country. Seventhly, illustrating the contribution of the community of Shendi area in spreading education. Eighthly, specifying the time of the intensive spreading of the educational institutions and the completion of the cycles of education ladder in Shendi area. (Author's abstract)
