The aim of this study is to demonstrate the importance of the pre-translation phase in the translation process, mainly the comprehension stage. In order to do this we have submitted to the translation a text containing cultural references in the form of wordplays to a group of Translation graduates, to which was attached a questionnaire comprising a set of questions about their work procedures. The results show us that the participants do not have the necessary linguistic and metalinguistic knowledge essential in order to translate this type of text, neither do they adopt the appropriate method nor do they carry out the necessary research for its specific translation. They do not use tools allowing a good understanding thus a better translation of the text in question. To conclude, we recommend the participants to address their shortcomings and improve their linguistic and extra linguistic skills. We recommend the Translation lecturers to establish a balance between the two phases of translation in order to explain to the learners each step of the translation process, and to provide them with the appropriate tools and means.
