A questionnaire was administered and distributed on a sample of 42 quality assurance & accreditation managers in Saudi universities. Content analysis was used on the role and tasks of the quality assurance & accreditation directors at a number of Saudi universities to derive the list of competencies required for them. The findings revealed that the 6 competencies included in the questionnaire were ranked as very important and required for the manager of quality and accreditation in Saudi universities. The ranking was as follows: the first was the “personal competencies” with an average of 4.70, followed by the “institu¬tional accreditation competencies” in the second place. The “administrative competencies” took the last place with an overall average of 4.50. However, with regard to the 6 competencies the results indicated that there are statistically significant differences between male and female samples and those working in the public and private sectors. Moreover, there is lack of statistically considerable differentiations due to qualification or number of years of experience. Based on the findings the study recommended to use these competencies as a frame of reference or a standard for: hiring, need assessment, training, and evaluating the performance of quality assurance and accreditation mangers in government or private local universities and colleges.
