This study aimed at investigating the effect of using video- mediated communication on the tenth grade EFL students' communicative competence. The study tried to answer the following questions: Q1: Are there any statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental and control groups in the communicative competence of language due to the method of teaching (video- mediated communication vs. regular communicative method)? Q2: In which communicative aspect of language (Socio- cultural, linguistic, pragmatic, prosodic and aesthetic) did the experimental students develop more as at using video- mediated communication? Q3: Are there any statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group students' performance in the productive skills (writing and speaking) as a result of using video mediated communication? The participants of the study consisted of 42 tenth grade students at Al- Jabal-Al-Alkhdher Co-educated Basic School, at Al-Mafraq Directorate of Education, during the second semester of the academic year 2016/2017. The participants of the study were in two sections; section A consisted of (21) students, which was assigned as the control group. It was taught by using the regular method of teaching, while section (B) which consisted of (21) students was selected as an experimental group. It was taught via video- mediated communication. A pre / post- test was administrated to assess the effect of using VMC on developing the EFL learners’ communicative competence. Students in both groups sat to the pre-test to determine their communicative competence before starting the experiment. Eight weeks later, the same test was administered on the both groups as a post-test to assess students' assess students’ development in communicative competence. Relevant statistical analysis related to means, standard deviation, T-test and One way ANOVA were used. The findings of the study indicated that using VMC in language teaching and learning has a significant effect on developing students' communicative competence. The findings of the study also indicated that it was clear that the difference was in favor of the experimental group. The results of the study indicated that the experimental group performed better that the control group in the sociocultural aspects of language due to the new method of teaching that is Web-cam chat. The results of the study showed that the experimental group acquired some sociocultural aspects rather than the others. Additionally, the findings of the study revealed that the experimental group students have developed their language skills. This might be due to the effect of using VMC. Accordingly, a set of recommendations were provided at the end of the study to encourage using VMC in language teaching and learning. (Author’s abstract)
