The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of loneliness and tolerance (religious, doctrinal, social and cultural) amongst the students of Princess Nora Bint Abdul Rahman University. It also aimed at investigating the differences in the use of the social networking sites depending on different academic disciplines (i.e. social sciences and natural sciences), and different academic attainment levels. In addition, the study focused on examining the differences in the levels of loneliness, as well as differences in the levels of tolerance, according to the dissimilarities in the use of the social networking sites. In order to accomplish the objectives of this study, an online tolerance scale and a loneliness questionnaire, uploaded to Qualtrics.com, have been formulated by the researchers and posted on the official forum of the university. The final sample size consisted of 373 students. Natural sciences accounted for 31.6% of that sample, whereas humanities and social sciences accounted for 68.4%. The results have showed that the average score for loneliness, and the average score for tolerance, stand at 1.80 and 3.09, respectively. Whilst that of the general average stand at 4.0, and hence we can conclude that the level of loneliness and the level of tolerance are weak and moderate, respectively. The results also indicated that the difference in time spent on social networking sites does not depend on the nature of academic discipline, academic level, or academic attainment. Moreover, no statistically significant evidence was found to suggest that the extent of the use of social networking sites affects the levels of loneliness and tolerance. In light of these findings, the researchers proposed a set of recommendations relevant to the subject of the study. (Published abstract)
