The present research aims at investigating the cognitive style (Scanning- Focusing) among university students and the statistical differences in the cognitive style (Scanning- Focusing) according to changes in the gender and specialty variables, in addition to recognizing the level of operating memory among university students on the basis of storing capacity using visual- auditory stimulators and the statistical differences in visual- auditory operating memory capacity according to the variables of gender and specialty and finding the connective relation between the cognitive style (Scanning- Focusing) and the visual- auditory operating memory among university students. The research, in order to achieve its aims, has depended on Vienna Test System produced by Schuhfried Austrian Company for measuring the variable of cognitive style (Scanning- Focusing) variable. The research has prepared a test for measuring the operating memory, it consists of five tasks; three visual tasks (numbers, letters, and images task) and two auditory ones (auditory words, and scientific subject). The standardized qualities of validity and consistency have been calculated. The research has applied the operating memory test after finishing checking the student’s cognitive style using the above mentioned system. The research sample consisted of 120 male and female student from the University of Baghdad (Jadriyah complex), the morning study, they have been chosen according to the stratified random sample of equal distribution. After collecting the data and processing it statistically using the T-test for one sample and two independent samples, Alpha- Kronback Equation, and Dual- Contrast Analysis with Pearson factor and slope factor, the research has arrived at the following conclusions: 1) University students are generally featured with the cognitive style (Scanning- Focusing) particularly dimension Scanning. 2) No differences of statistical significance exist according to the variable of gender and specialty in dimension scanning, as for dimension Focusing it appeared that there are differences of statistical significance according to the variable of gender for the benefit of male and scientific specialization. 3) University students enjoy a good level of operating memory. 4) No differences of statistical significance exist according to the variables of gender and specialty in the operating memory. 5) There is a connective relation between the cognitive style (Scanning- Focusing) and the operating working memory (visual- auditory). In the light of the results, the researcher has submitted a number of conclusions, recommendations and suggestions. (Author’s abstract)
