Team Teaching is a teaching technique that involves teachers joining forces to plan, conduct and evaluate the learning activities for a group of pupils. This technique provides for an improved and more complete class experience by combining the knowledge and skills of several teachers. There are a few different types of Team Teaching, and more than one type may be carried out within one class period. The researcher has adopted one of these types and has carried out in her class. There are many positive effects associated with team teaching, but there are also many things that need to be considered before jumping into a team teaching technique. The problem investigated in this work is related to the low achievement of Iraqi pupils in English. There are many factors that affect students’ achievement, at the heart of these factors is the teacher. A less effective teacher can significantly lower students' achievement. Most Iraqi teachers have often had limited exposure to modern teaching methods and pedagogy, as well as limited access to recent publications in their respective fields of specialization. The new curricula would need to take into account modern pedagogical approaches and techniques. As a result, there is a need to investigate new technique in which teachers work together to build their mutual strengths and to share their teaching knowledge and experiences for the development of their expertise. The present study, therefore, aims at finding out: The effect of Team Teaching technique on first intermediate school pupils’ achievement in English. It is hypothesized that: There is no statistically significant difference between the achievement of the experimental group (which is taught by Team Teaching technique) and that of the control group (which is taught by the conventional method). Thus, an experiment is designed. Sixty- four pupils from AL-Arfan Intermediate School for girls have been randomly chosen ( thirty-two pupils as an experimental group which is taught by Team Teaching technique and thirty-two pupils as control group which is taught by conventional technique) during the academic year 2012-2013. Meanwhile, the subjects of both groups are matched according to their age, level of parents’ education and their scores in the mid-year examination. The experimental group has been taught by the researcher and another teacher according to Team teaching technique while the control group has been taught by the researcher only according to conventional technique. An Achievement test has been constructed to be the instrument of the present study. The validity of the achievement test (oral and written), objectives and rating scales have been obtained by exposing them to jury members in the field of ELT and Linguistics. However, the achievement test (oral and written) yield content validity since it is constructed according to an accurate specification of the content and according to the test map. The pilot study has been administered to 100 pupils who have been randomly selected. The reliability of the written test has been secured by using Alpha Cronbach Formula and concerning the reliability of the oral test Scorer/ Rater Reliability has been used. Statistical analysis of data achieved through the test indicates that there are statistically significant differences between the experimental group achievement (taught by Team Teaching technique) and that of the control group (taught by Conventional method), in favor of the experimental group. The researcher concludes that using Team Teaching technique spreads responsibility, encourages creativity, deepens friendships, and builds community between teachers. Teachers complement one another. They learn new perspectives, techniques and values from watching one another. This technique also opens students' minds to accept more than one opinion and to act more cooperatively with others. Team Teaching provides educational benefits such as increasing student's level of understanding and retention, in addition to enable student to obtain higher achievement. (Published abstract)
