This study raises the issue of textbook translation and the problems associated with the method of translation, be it a literal translation that ignores the culture of the source language or a communicative interpretive translation that emphasizes intellectual content and not merely the linguistic framework. The study recommends that the textbook translator navigate, not only between the two languages concerned but also between the two cultures and peoples who speak these languages. In addition to the linguistic and cultural problems involved in textbook translation, there are cognitive, educational, psychological, and even ideological and political problems, as well as the problem illustration and layout and the lack of up-to-datedness of its scientific content year after year. Yet despite these problems, the researcher concludes that academically underdeveloped countries need textbook translation until they become autonomously capable of textbook development and scientific productivity.
