This study aims to examine the relationship between the acceptance of illness, optimism, pessimism, and the quality of life among Type I diabetic patients, and to identify gender differences in these variables among a sample of Kuwaiti secondary schools’ students (N= 171, 78 males and 93 females Mage= 16.5 years, age range: 15-24 years) from government schools. The Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS) (developed by Felton et al., 1984 and translated by Al-Ansari, unpublished), the Arabic Inventory of Optimism and Pessimism (developed by Abdel-Khalek, 1996), and the Diabetes Quality of Life (DQQL) (developed by Jacobson, 1994; and translated by Al-Shatti 2012) were administered. Psycho¬metric properties of these scales were measured and high reliability and validity scores were obtained. The results revealed no significant differences between males and females in regard to the acceptance of illness, optimism, pessimism, and quality of life (total score and its components). However, there was a positive relationship between the acceptance of illness and optimism, a negative relation¬ship between the acceptance of illness and pessimism, and negative relationship between the acceptance of illness and diabetes quality of life. Results were discussed in light of reviewed literature and related previous studies. (Published abstract)
