هدفت الدراسة إلى التعرف على مستوى ممارسة رؤساء الأقسام الأكاديمية في كلية التربية في جامعة أم القرى لمصادر سلطتهم من وجهة نظر أعضاء هيئة التدريس واختلاف مستوى الممارسة باختلاف الرتبة الأكاديمية، والخبرة، ومصدر آخر مؤهل. ولتحقيق هذا الهدف استخدم الباحث استبانة تكونت من 38 فقرة موزعة على سبعة مجالات .وتم التأكد من صدق الأداة والثبات، وقد بلغ معامل الثبات 0.97، وتكونت عينة الدراسة من 113 من أعضاء هيئة التدريس، إسترجعت منها 90 استبانة، أي بنسبة 80% من إجمالي الاستبانات. أظهرت نتائج الدراسة أن ترتيب مصادر سلطة رؤساء الأقسام في كلية التربية في جامعة أم القرى مرتبة تنازليا وفقا لدرجة ممارستها كانت: الشرعية، ثم المعلومات والمكانة الاجتماعية، ثم الإقناع وإدارة الصراع، ثم المرجعية، ثم الثوابية، ثم الخبرة، ثم القسرية. وأظهرت النتائج وجود فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية لمستوى ممارسة رؤساء الأقسام لمصادر سلطتهم، تعزى للرتبة الأكاديمية، والخبرة، ومصدر آخر مؤهل. وأوصى الباحث بضرورة عقد دورات لرؤساء الأقسام توجيههم نحو مصادر السلطة غير الرسمية كأساس للعمل القيادي، وإجراء دراسات حول العلاقة بين مصادر سلطة رؤساء الأقسام والرضا الوظيفي والالتزام التنظيمي لدى أعضاء هيئة التدريس. The study aimed to identify the level of practice of department chairpersons of the sources of their authority in the College of Education at Umm Al-Qura University, from the perspective of faculty members and according to their academic rank, experience, and the last academic qualification. To achieve this goal, the researcher used the questionnaire contained two parts: The first part asked the faculty members for personal information, and the second part to measure the level of practice of department chairpersons their authority sources. The questionnaire included 38 items distributed to the seven dimensions. The study questionnaire was validated by a team of fifteen experts. The reliability coefficients were found by conducting Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency and were found to be 0.97. The questionnaire was applied to the study population which comprised 113 faculty members as college of education at Umm Al-Qura University for the academic year 2010/2011, 90 questionnaires returned with 80%. The findings of study showed that the practice levels of the sources of authority by department chairpersons in the college of Education were in the following descending order: Legitimacy, information, social status, persuasion and conflict management, referent, rewards, experience, and coercion. The results of study showed there were significant differences between the means at the significance level α = 0.05 regarding to the level of practice of department chairpersons of the sources of their authority, attributed to the academic rank, experience, and the last academic qualification. Based on the findings of this study, the researcher recommended holding training workshops for department chairpersons to guide them towards sources of informal authority as the basis for the work of leadership, and conduct studies on the relationship between the sources of authority of department chairpersons and job satisfaction and organizational commitment of the faculty members.
