يعتبر مجتمع المعرفة هو ذلك المجتمع الذي يقوم أساسا على نشر المعرفة وإنتاجها وتوظيفها بكفاءة في جميع مجالات النشاط المجتمعي وصولا لترقية الحالة الإنسانية باطراد. ويتصف مجتمع المعرفة بأنه مجتمع التعلم يضم منظمات تعلم يعتمد فيها النجاح، الاقتصادي على قدرة العاملين على التعلم الذاتي والتعلم التشاركى، واقتصاد المعرفة ويعمل بطاقة العقل. ويتناول البحث خصائص مجتمع المعرفة التخصصية، ومنظمات التعلم، العمل في فريق، والاستقصاء، والتعلم المستمر، وتقنيات الاتصال والمعلومات، والعولمة. دور مؤسسات التعليم المستمر في بناء مجتمع المعرفة: تقدم ثقافة عامة ذات مستوى عال، وغرس الانضباط المستمر للتعلم، وتفتح أبوابها للجميع، وتقدم المعرفة في صورة محتوى وعمليات، والتعلم يجب أن يعم المجتمع كله. واستعداد مؤسسات التعليم المستمر في الوطن العربي استيفائها للإسهام في بناء مجتمع المعرفة: إعادة النظر في رسالة مؤسسات التعليم المستمر وأهدافها، وتحويل مؤسسات التعليم إلى منظمات تعلم، وتطوير المناهج وطرق التدريس وأساليب التقويم، وتطبيق تقنيات الاتصال والمعلومات في التعليم واستيعاب متطلبات العولمة، وجهود ضمان الجهود. A society of knowledge is a society based primarily on the extending, production and efficient use of knowledge in all domains of community activity, in order to progressively promote the human aspect.
