يهدف هذا المقال إلى الكشف عن العلاقة الممكنة بين السمع والدافعية. وينقسم إلى قسمين رئيسيين :نظري تطبيقي. يعرف في القسم النظري السمع مركزا على العوائق التي تعترض الطلبة في فهم اللغة الإنجليزية عندما يستمعون إليها عبر التلفاز أو المذياع، ثم يتطرق إلى تعريف الدافعية ودورها في عملية التعلم والتحصيل، وأخيرا يقارن بين الدافعية الداخلية والدافعية الخارجية. أما القسم التطبيقي فيكشف عن العلاقة بين السمع والدافعية. لقد أوضحت نتائج الدراسة أن الطلبة الذين لديهم دافعية خارجية، والذين يمثلون الأغلبية في العينة المدروسة لا يستمعون إلى الإنجليزية بقسط كاف خارج الإطار الجامعي.
