Categorization, a cognitive process impaired in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is the focus of this research. The goal is to train children with ASD in categorization, assessing its impact on this skill, as well as on the severity of ASD, developmental age, and communication. An experimental group of 28 children with ASD (7 girls, 21 boys), aged 4 to 11, underwent a three-month training program. Evaluations conducted before and after training, utilized the Vineland, CARS, and the categorization section of the EIS (Assessment, intervention, and follow-up). The results underscore the importance of targeted training to enhance categorization in children with ASD, suggesting specific associations with developmental age, communication and ASD severity. They reveal that children with ASD rely on perceptual rather than conceptual criteria for information categorization. (Published abstract)

La catégorisation est un processus cognitif fondamental dans la perception et la compréhension des concepts et d’objets et dans toutes les formes d’interactions avec l’environnement. Ce processus semble déficitaire chez les personnes avec trouble du spectre autistique (TSA) . Ce qui à amener à entamer la présente recherche qui vise à entraîner les enfants avec TSA dans le domaine de catégorisation et vérifier l’efficacité de cet entrainement non seulement sur la catégorisation mais aussi sur l’intensité du TSA, l’âge de développement et la communication. Pour cela nous avons construit un groupe expérimentale de 28 enfants avec TSA (7 filles, 21 garçons) âgé de 4 à 11 ans. Les résultats relèvent que les enfants avec TSA se basent sur des critères perceptifs plutôt que conceptuels pour catégoriser l’information et certain type de catégorisation sont significativement liée a l’âge de développement, la communication et aussi avec l’intensité du troublr du spectre autistique.
