Brain drain is defined as the migration of health workers in search of a better standard of living and higher quality of life, higher salaries, access to advanced technology and more stable political conditions in various places around the world. This migration of health professionals in search of better opportunities, within countries and across international borders, is a growing concern worldwide due to its impact on health systems in developing countries. Why do talented people leave their country and travel abroad? What are the consequences of such migrations, especially on the education sector? What policies can be adopted to stop such movements from developing to developed countries? This article seeks to raise questions, identify key issues and provide solutions that will enable migrant health professionals to share their knowledge, skills and innovation capabilities and thus enhance the economic development of their countries.
