يهدف هذا البحث إلى معرفة أسباب انخفاض الميول القرائية لدى طلبة المرحلة الجامعية، وكذا معرفة الآثار المترتبة على انخفاض تلك الميول. وقد اتبع الباحث المنهج الوصفي التحليلي، وأعد لذلك استبانة طبقها على عينة قوامها (66) طالباً وطالبة من جامعة العلوم والتكنولوجيا. وأشارت النتائج إلى أن هناك أسباباً لانخفاض الميول القرائية، أبرزها أن أغلب الكتب التي يقرؤها الطلبة هي كتب ثقافية ودينية وتخصصية على الترتيب؛ وأن أغلبية العينة لا يشترون الصحف اليومية؛ وأن الوالدين والأستاذ الجامعي يسهمون أحيانا في توجيه الطلبة إلى القراءة بدرجة متوسطة؛ وأن هناك آثارا سلبية تترتب على انخفاض الميول القرائية أهمها: عدم القدرة على التعبير بصورة جيدة، والخوف من مواجهة الآخرين والتفاعل مع المثقفين. وقد خلص الباحث إلى بعض التوصيات، منها أن يعمل القائمون على العملية التربوية في الجامعات على التخفيف من الأعباء المرتبطة بكثافة المناهج الدراسية، والعمل على توفير المادة القرائية المحببة والمراجع المبسطة ضمن دائرة اهتمام الدارسين وميولهم، وأيضا التأكيد على أهمية شراء الكتب والصحف والمواد التعليمية ذات الفائدة والخبرة للطلبة. This research aimed to identify the causes and effects of low reading tendency among undergraduate students. The researcher followed the analytical descriptive method, and developed a questionnaire which was administered to a sample of (66) students (male and female) from the University of Science and Technology. The study results revealed certain reasons behind low reading tendency. First, most of the books that participants read are general knowledge, religious and specialized books, respectively. Second, the majority of the participants do not buy daily newspapers. Third, parents and university professors sometimes play a role in affecting the students’ tendency to read. The study also revealed some negative effects of such low tendency. The major one is that students become less expressive, and afraid of talking to others and interacting with educated people. The study recommended reducing curriculum burdens on students, providing interesting reading materials to them and buying interesting books, newspapers and learning materials that would develop students’ knowledge and experience.
