This study aims to measure the general motivation in the students of the institution of linguistics in King Saud University for learning Arabic language as a second language. Furthermore, it measures both instrumental and cognitive motivation and detects whether the motivation is week or strong in those students. Not to mention that it shows the most important obstacles and impulses that effect the motivation from the students' perspective. The researcher used Manusak scale for measuring the motivation for learning English language as a foreign language, and it is consisted of a survey of 20 items. The researcher translated Manusak scale with its instrumental and integrative motivation parts. She applied this study on 50 students of the institution of Arabic linguistics in 2018- 2019, and the results illustrated that the general motivation level for learning Arabic language in students was high. In addition, the integrative motivation was also high while the instrumental motivation was moderate. There were some impulses and obstacles form the students' perspective resulted from this study. There are classroom impulses such as encouragement phrases, explaining vocabulary in greater detail, and using educational materials like pictures and videos. The obstacles were divided into: classroom obstacles such as concentrating on grammar and literary texts and social obstacles such as the existence of slang and not understanding its most vocabulary. The researcher suggested some ideas that could increase the motivation in students such as using technology in teaching, building activities that help students merge into society, holding training courses to extend the students' knowledge of slang. To conclude, the researcher recommended to conduct more researches on measuring the motivation and researches on motivation dynamic. (Published abstract)
