The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a three suggested methods adopted from dual coding theory and based on collaborative work for developing some critical listening skills for the third year English department students in the faculty of Education, Damietta University. The study used a quasi- experimental design to investigate the effect of three strategies “captions, imagery and the multimodal processing”. 60 students from third year English department were selected randomly in order to represent the three experimental groups. Each group consisted of 20 students. Moreover, a pre-post test developed by the researcher was administrated to the three experimental groups. The findings showed that: 1) the use of the three proposed strategies based on collaborative work develops critical listening skills for EFL participants. 2) The use of dual coding theory features and collaborative work increases participants’ motivation toward learning, as they tackle real life problem. 3) The participants were provided with successful language learning experiences which motivated their participation and improved their performance. In light of these findings, a series of recommendations were suggested. (Shamaa)
