Needs assessment of university skills required for students of the first common year from the perspective of students, faculty members and academic leaders at King Saud University [Article]
The current study aimed to identify the required skills for undergraduate students in order to design “University Skills Course” for the first common year students at King Saud University. Therefore, needs assessment procedure was conducted as the first instructional design process phases. Thus, multiple data collection instruments were employed to the research questions from the perspective of students, Faculty members and academic leaders. Three questionnaires were developed. Each questionnaire contains 50 items related to academic skills. Additionally, three workshops were conducted for students, Faculty members and academic leaders. The outcomes of study led to an agreement on 13 skills: data processing and effective memorization, communication in the university environment, summarization and mind mapping, scientific research tools, elements of scientific research writing, techniques of scientific research writing and its ethics, information research fields, presentation skills and public speaking, future planning, critical thinking, creative thinking, The Six Thinking Hats and self-discovery marketing.
