This study aimed at investigating the effect of using mind maps on developing achievement and problem solving ability among low achievers at the preparatory stage. To achieve this aim, the researcher prepared a unit in geometry and measurement assigned to the first graders at the preparatory stage using mind maps. The researcher also prepared a teacher’s manual that explains how to teach the selected unit using mind maps strategy and worksheets for the students. An achievement test and a mathematical problem solving test were also prepared. A random sample from the first grade students at Altahreer Preparatory School for Girls in Port Said Governorate, 2011/ 2012 was selected. The sample was divided into an experimental (n= 45 students) and a control group (n=45 students). Thus the total number of the participants was 90 students including 21 low achievers in the experimental group and 22 in the control group. Tools of the study were administered to the participants before and after the experiment. Results of the study revealed that mind maps strategy was effective in developing achievement and mathematical problem solving. The researcher presented a number of recommendations and suggested studies. (Published abstract)
