The debate about citation analysis as metrics to rank academic journals have never stopped since long. This article aims at drawing history of the development of journal ranking based on citation analysis and illustrating the debate around current metrics as means of assessment of journal quality. The article also discusses the impact of current citation indexes on the ranking of journal published in Arabic language. The article established that the criticism about journal ranking metrics has been on since its emergence in the earlier beginning of twentieth century to the introduction of the famous Impact Factor (IF), and the development of other competing metrics such as h-index, Eigenfactor, SCImango Journal Rank and Arab Impact Factor. The article also discussed the problematic of raking journal published in Arabic language and the necessity of putting a lot of effort in the development of Arab Impact Factor as alternative for ranking Arabic journals.
