This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a proposed strategy based on the habits of mind in developing some literary appreciation skills among the third-year Arabic Language Division students at the Faculty of Education in Tafhna Al-Ashraf, Al-Azhar University. The study consisted of (60) students that were assigned into two groups: an experimental group (30) and a control one (30). The research instruments including a list of the literary appreciation skills, a cognitive test and a performance scale of the literary appreciation skills were developed and validated. The developed experimental treatment included a suggested strategy based on the habits of mind from the view of Costa & Kallick's, namely applying the previous knowledge to new situations, listening intelligibly and compassionately, reciprocal thinking, thinking about thinking (metacognition), taking risks responsibly, innovation, imagination and renewal). After administering the instruments on both groups in the pretest, the researcher himself implemented the suggested program on the experimental group while the control group was taught according to the usual way. After administering the instruments in the posttest to the research groups, the data were statistically analyzed using the (SPSS) program. The results indicated that the proposed strategy based on the habits of mind was effective in developing some literary appreciation skills among the third-year students at the Faculty of Education in Tafhna Al-Ashraf, Al-Azhar University. The measured effect size and the gain ratio of the modified Black were large. (Published abstract)
