The current descriptive study aimed to identify the main challenges facing higher education institutions environment to transform into a professional learning community (PLC) with regard to gender and specialization. A questionnaire of (40) items was applied to (524) Saudi students to identify the challenges at Taibah University. The results of the Independent Sample T Test indicated that there were no statistically significant differences with regard to the major challenges except for the component "learner" in favor of the female students. The results also indicated statistically significant differences between the average scores of the research sample with respect to the specialization in the main academic components: learning, learner, teacher, content, teaching methods, and assessment methods in favor of the theoretical faculties, while the component “institutional climate” was in favor of the scientific colleges.
