The purpose of the study was to identify the challenges to successful total quality management (TQM) implementation in Saudi higher education institutions (HEIs) according to the perspectives of faculty members. A quantitative study was conducted to identify the demographic independent variables of faculty members (i.e., years of experience, gender, and job status) that may have impacted the strategic, organizational, human resources, and procedural challenges of TQM implementation as the dependent variables. A total of 194 faculty members of Yanbu Industrial College and Yanbu University College in Yanbu Al Sinaiyah City completed the online survey developed for this study. The survey instrument contained two parts. The first part collected some demographic variables of the respondents, and the second part included the 20 challenges to successful TQM implementation. The survey followed a five-point Likert-type scale to rate the challenges to successful TQM implementation. Quantitative data were collected using an electronic survey to find answers to four research questions found in this study. This study included one descriptive question and three null hypotheses that were tested. The data showed that strategic challenges ranked first as most challenging, followed by procedural challenges, human resources challenges, and organizational challenges. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) test was applied to see if significant differences existed between faculty members in each four categories of TQM implementation challenges based on the independent variable that was examined for each null hypothesis. The major findings of the study were: 1) a significant difference existed between faculty members based on their years of experience in strategic, organizational, and human resources challenges; 2) a significant difference did not exist between faculty members based on gender; and 3) a significant difference did not exist between faculty members based on job status. Implications for Saudi HEIs along with further research recommendations were suggested. (As Provided)
