يعرض البحث لتاريخ مؤسسة "جورج أكرت" الألمانية للبحوث الدولية حول الكتب المدرسية مشيراً إلى المسار التاريخي لكتاب التاريخ من مرحلة ما قبل الحرب العالمية الأولى إلى أيامنا. وبعد استعراض حياة جورج أكرت (1912-1974) المؤرخ الألماني الأصل، تشير الدراسة إلى دوره في مكافحة التحريض والتطرف القومي وتمجيد الحروب في الكتب المدرسية مما دفعه في سنة 1951 إلى تأسيس المعهد الدولي لتحسين الكتب المدرسية الذي أصبح في سنة 1975 ملكية عامة لألمانيا التي قررت أن يحمل المعهد اسم الرجل الذي أسسه. وبرأي "أكرت" فإن من الأفضل، لحل مشكلات التعامل والتعصب، أن تركّز كتب التاريخ على الجوانب الاجتماعية والثقافية والاقتصادية أكثر من الجوانب السياسية وأعمال الزعماء. ويكرر البحث أن غاية مؤسسة جورج أكرت هي العمل على تحسين العلاقة بين الأمم والشعوب والجماعات عبر استبعاد التحريض والتنميط السلبي للناس من الكتب التعليمية، وتسليط الضوء على التعاون والسلام والتعددية في الآراء والمواقف. ومن الناحية العملية ساهمت المؤسسة في إنتاج كتب اجتماعيات للبوسنة والهرسك وكوسوفا والأراضي الفلسطينية المحتلة بعد أن أشرفت على مشروعات كثيرة لصياغة مضامين كتب التاريخ في فرنسا وألمانيا وبولندا وبريطانيا. وفي السنوات الأخيرة شرعت مؤسسة "أكرت" بإجراء دراسات حول صورة الإسلام في الكتب المدرسية الأوروبية وحول صورة الغرب في الكتب المدرسية العربية إضافة إلى كتب تاريخ عن الصراع العربي-الإسرائيلي. وقد واجه المؤلفون في كل هذه الحالات مشكلة أساسية تتمثل في كيفية اختصار قضايا معقدة في الكتب المدرسية دون تنميط مضمون هذه الكتب. The study presents the history of the George Eckhart Foundation for International Research on Textbooks, tracing the development of history textbooks from the pre-World War I era to the present. After profiling the life of George Eckhart (1912-1974), the German-born historian, the study focuses on his role in combating national chauvinism, provocation, and glorification of war in school textbooks, a role which prompted him in 1951 to found the International Institute for Textbook Improvement. In 1975, the Institute became the public property of Germany, which named the Foundation after its founder. In Eckhart’s view, it is best, in order to solve the problems of interaction and chauvinism, for history textbooks to focus on the social, cultural, and economic aspects rather than on the political aspects and on the actions of the political leaders. The study repeatedly notes that the mission of the George Eckhart Foundation is to work toward improving the relationship between nations, peoples, and groups by eliminating provocation and negative stereotyping of people in textbooks and highlighting, instead, the virtues of cooperation, peace, and pluralism in perspectives and attitudes. On the practical level, the Foundation has contributed to producing social studies books for Bosnia, Herzegovina, Kosovo, and the occupied Palestinian territories. The Foundation has earlier supervised many projects for preparing the content of history textbooks in France, Germany, Poland, and Britain. In recent years, the Eckhart Foundation conducted studies on the image of Islam in European textbooks and the image of the West in Arabic textbooks as well as in books on the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict. In all these cases, the authors faced the fundamental problem of how to sum up complex issues in textbooks without stereotyping the content of these textbooks. (Published Abstract)
