The relationship between students comprehension of the concept of the periodic table of elements and their attitudes towards learning chemistry [Article]
This study aimed to identify comprehension level of periodic table concept for secondary school students, and the relationship between their comprehensions of the periodic table concept and their attitudes towards learning Chemistry in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. To achieve the study aim, descriptive and relations methods were conducted. Data of the study was collected via the use of two tools, namely: comprehension test of the periodic table concept, and students’ attitudes toward chemistry instrument. The validity and the reliability of the tools were assured. The sample of the study consisted of (120) students, which were drawn via random clustering sample from 11th and 12th grades. Results showed that the students’ comprehension level of the periodic table concept was weak, where the weighted percentage was (43%). Also, findings revealed that students’ attitudes toward learning chemistry were intermediate for all of the four categories, namely: interest in chemistry classes, understanding and learning chemistry, importance of chemistry in our real life, and chemistry and career choice, with means (2.90, 2.58, 3.14, 2.50) respectively. Furthermore, results concluded that there was a positive correlation with a coefficient of (0.226) between students’ comprehension of the periodic table concept and their attitudes towards learning chemistry, where 12th grade students› attitudes towards chemistry were more positive than those of 11th grade students with regard to categories, such as: importance of chemistry in our real life. However, there were no statistically significant differences in the students’ attitudes toward chemistry regarding categories, such as interest in chemistry classes, understanding and learning chemistry, chemistry and career choice, and the tool as a whole.
