إنّ ما كُتِب من تاريخ المجتمع اللبناني الحديث والمعاصر، اعتمد في معظمه على مصادر ومراجع تتناول أساساً الأحداث السياسية وتتصل بالقضايا الخارجية والأوضاع الدولية، وهذا ما جعل الكتابات التاريخية تعكس الجوانب الخارجية على المجتمع المحلي، وخاصة المظهر السياسي منها والتنظيم الإداري والعسكري، في حين ظلت التطورات الداخلية والتفاعلات الذاتية، التي تعبّر عن حقيقة المجتمع المحلّي، هامشية إن لم تكن غائبة. وهذا ما يتطلب إعادة كتابة التاريخ من خلال مصادر ووثائق جديدة، الأمر الذي يوجب على الباحث الرجوع إلى وثائق الأرياف لاستقرائها وتحليل مضمونها التاريخي وفهم دلالاتها الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والثقافية. فالتاريخ الريفي، يمتاز عن غيره من الدراسات التاريخية والاجتماعية والإنسانية بكثرة وثائقه الأصلية من: دفاتر "ميري" ومساحة وسندات "طابو" وصكوك بيع وشراء وتوكيل ووصايا وشراكة وسندات دين وإيصالات ضرائب والتزام وأعشار، ودفاتر حسابات وقفية وخاصة، وغيرها من الأوراق الرسمية والخاصة التي مازالت بكراً وتحتاج إلى من ينفض الغبار عنها، والتعامل معها، باعتبارها مصدرا تاريخيا من الدرجة الأولى، والتعرّف على أنواعها وأشكالها من حيث معطياتها وأساليب صياغتها، ولغة كتابتها. وذلك لأن وثائق الأرياف اللبنانية، تُعتبر من حيث مضمونها التاريخي، منطلقاً لتوسيع مجال البحث التاريخي وتطوير مناهجه، انطلاقاً من طرح إشكالية جديدة تهدف إلى تحديد ملامح الحياة اليومية في مختلف أوجهها ومظاهرها، وتعدد أنشطَتِها وإجراءاتها. وتوفّر لنا الوسيلة الملائمة والطريقة الأنجع لتجديد نظرتنا، وإعادة فهمنا لتاريخ المناطق اللبنانية، سواء من حيث الأحداث التي تأثرت بها أو القضايا التي عايشتها وتفاعلت معها. Most of what has been written on the modern and contemporary history of Lebanese society depends on sources and reference works dealing basically with political events as related to foreign issues and international developments. The result has been that this history writing reflects the foreign impact on the local society, and in particular the political aspect, as well as the administrative and military organization. The internal developments and the indigenous interactions which express the reality of the local society remain marginal in them, when not totally absent. This situation makes imperative that this history be rewritten on the basis of new sources and documents. This, in turn, obliges the researcher to investigate rural documents and analyze their historical content, so as to draw conclusions as to the implications of the evidence therein regarding the social, economic and cultural circumstances. The study of rural history, in contradistinction to other studies in history, sociology and anthropology, disposes of a wealth of original documents: taxation books “defter miri”, land title books, “tapu” land leases, sales and purchase deeds, authorization/delegation documents, wills, partnerships, loan bonds, tax, pledge and tithe receipts, accounting books both of endowments “wakf” and of private accounts, as well as other official and private documents. All these documents remain a virgin area for research, waiting for someone to come and remove the dust and approach them as a primary source of history; someone who would become familiar with their types and formal attributes as regards their characteristics, rules of formulation and language. Indeed, rural Lebanese documents provide, in terms of their historical content, an impetus to widening the scope of historical research and developing its methodology. They pose a new task definition, one which aims at describing the contours of daily life in all its facets, manifestations, variety of activities and procedures. They also provide us with the appropriate means and the effective method to renew our perception and revise our understanding of the history of the various regions of the Lebanon, both in terms of the events that had an impact on them and the issues with which they interacted.
